Luno’s Tokenized Stocks Hit 10,000 Users in South Africa

Luno had initially launched its tokenized stocks offering in South Africa last month. So far, the reception has been great, with a reported 10,000 people investing in global stocks through Luno.

The product was initially launched with 44 stocks in early August. However, 15 new stocks, including the S&P 500, have been added.

Why This Matters

The launch of real-world assets (RWAs) trading in Africa’s two largest crypto markets shows that the African crypto market is maturing. It also sets up an interesting dynamic with Wealthtech platforms that offer traditional investment services in global stocks.

Ayotunde Alabi, CEO of Luno Nigeria had this to say,

“Nigerians have shown that when an innovation makes financial life easier and safer, they will overcome initial scepticism and adopt it. Tokenized stocks address a real need by letting people invest in top global companies easily, something previously out of reach due to high costs and complex procedures. If we demonstrate that this product is safe and valuable, Nigerians will use it”

Luno Nigeria CEO, Ayotunde Alabi

The global tokenized real-world asset (RWA) market is worth $27.8 billion as of September 2025. And it is high time Africa got in on the action.

A major advantage that tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) offer Africans in fractional ownership. Potential investors don’t need to buy a whole share of expensive global stocks; they can buy a part according to their budgets.

Finally, tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) go beyond stocks and ETFs. Real estate, art, and commodities (gold, oil) can be tokenized. African Web3 enthusiasts can look forward to a time when tokenized commodities, art, and real estate will become accessible on our local exchanges.
