The ongoing Hedera Hackathon received a massive boost after a sponsor doubled the prize pool to $2 million. This latest development raises the stakes in what the organisers claim is the largest Web3 hackathon in the world.
African VC Pledges $1 Million To Hedera Africa Hackathon
Dar Blockchain, the operators of the Hedera Africa Hackathon, reposted an X post that announced the doubling of the prize pool. According to the update, an African venture capital firm based in Tunisia, UGFS Africa, had pledged to invest $1 million in the winners. This doubled the former $1m prize pool.

Spotlight on Hedera Africa Hackathon
Hedera Africa Hackathon is a Web3 event for builders and innovators in Africa to work together to develop meaningful Web3 solutions. The winning team gets access to $1 million in grants, and $1 million in VC funding.
This Hackathon is organised by The Hashgraph Association, the non-profit behind the Hedera blockchain, and Exponential Science, a foundation focused on innovation and adoption of emerging tech such as blockchain and AI.

It has been on since the 1st June, 2025 and will round up on November 30 with the awards during the closing ceremony. However, the building phase began on 1st August and will run until the end of September. Interested builders can still register before 30th September. So far, over 10,000 participants have registered.
Participants can compete solo or as a team of between 2 to 7 individuals. Matchmaking happens on Telegram and Discord. The competitors will also receive mentorship.

Events like the Hedera Africa Hackathon give potential builders the opportunity to showcase their talent, ideas, and solutions. Participants will gain a ton of building experience, significantly enriching Africa’s Web3 space.

Additionally, even products that don’t win could eventually grow into transformative solutions. Furthermore, the networks built over the course of the Hackathon could be the foundation for the next big African Web3 project.
