According to research done by Canvassing, a blockchain research platform, young people between the ages of 18 and 25 are the largest participants in community governance and voting.

The research sampled the opinions of 184 Africans from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Tunisia concerning community participation and voting. The ensuing report revealed interesting trends among Africa’s Web3 enthusiasts.

Gen Zs Take Responsibility

One of the more interesting results of the research is how young Africa’s Web3 community participants are. 68.9% of respondents are between the ages of 18 and 25. This shows that Gen Zs, a generation born into the latest technological revolution, are heavily involved in Web3.

The fact that 92.5% of those surveyed are under 35 also shows that Web3 in Africa is driven by young people. This points to an interesting future for Africa as a whole.

Africans Are Doing Much More Than Hodling

Canvassing’s research also reveals sophistication among African crypto natives. 32.6% of respondents have interacted with DeFi protocols, DAOs, and governance tokens. At the same time, another 34.8% have trading and basic DeFi knowledge. This means 64.7% of those surveyed have serious experience with crypto systems, indicating a knowledgeable population.

In the same vein, only 2.2% of respondents had no crypto knowledge at all. Meanwhile, 23.4% identified themselves as beginners who only buy and hold crypto.

I Put My Money Where My Mouth Is…

Crypto voting usually involves staking your tokens/digital assets to back your choice. Interestingly, the research shows that this is not a problem. 71.6% respondents have previously backed up their choices with financial commitment.

Token-Based Voting? Bring It On!

Only 8.7% of those surveyed revealed that they were scared of losing their money in a token-based voting system. The majority (86.3%) were either excited about the possibility or curious enough to give it a try. This indicates that Africans are willing to engage with community governance initiatives within projects they participate in.
